Sacramento Bartending School

One of the granddaddies of the business, Sacramento Bartending School has been training budding bar keeps for over four decades, having first opened its doors in 1959.

Renowned as a ‘Californian institution’, thousands of students have gone through its intensive, hands-on program and successfully found employment within the hospitality industry, with the school serving Sacramento itself, as well as the surrounding areas of Stockton, Folsom and Fresno. The academy is the state’s oldest working school of its kind, as well as one of the longest-standing bartending schools in the United States, and its cachet is significantly boosted by the fact that it has received approval from the California Board of Education.

Even though the Sacramento Bartending School (SBS) boasts two fully-functioning mock bars within its facility – the largest contemporary setup to be found in California’s capital city, locatedin the La Riviera district between Route 50 and the winding American River – it maintains a small, independent vibe and prides itself on the fact that it is not part of a huge school chain where students could easily become lost in the crowd. Instead, class sizes at SBS are kept small in order to focus on personalized instruction with plenty of one-to-one learning in order to meet its standards of excellence: they openly admit their classes are not easy, but anyone who makes the grade will be equipped with everything they need to succeed in the often ultra-competitive world of the professional bartender.

The school goes that little bit further for pupils too, with individual work stations and the use of real fruit garnishes and cream to provide an authentic working experience. Job placement is key plank in the program, and SBS has an industry-leading employment assistance scheme for graduates with contacts within the hospitality industry – including pubs, bars, taverns, restaurants and clubs – spread far and wide – even internationally. ‘Job Placement Assistance’ is lifetime for anyone who successfully completes the course.

Sacramento Bartending School offers a ‘Professional Bartending Course’ for people seeking to learn the art of tending bar, at a cost of $399 for forty hours spread over ten classes. This includes all tuition, books/reading material and placement assistance, and there are numerous time slots to choose from with courses run during daytime, evenings or weekends. Topics covered include customer service, setting up and breaking down the bar, liquor knowledge, beer and wine service and looking after your equipment. As well as this in-depth tuition, students will be taught the recipes for over two hundred classic and contemporary drinks and mixes.

SBS welcomes drop-ins from interested parties who would like to see what goes on in a class before they sign up, and are so confident that you will choose their program that they actively encourage you to check out the competition beforehand. If you do select Sacramento as your school, they offer several payment plans in order for students to spread the cost, as well as the ‘BarSim’ trainer which has been customized to match and support the school’s curriculum. BarSim is an online interactive program which simulates working behind a bar and allows you to further brush up on those bartending fundamentals, drinks recipes and other skills. Further to this, all graduates have the exclusive opportunity to enrol in the SBS ‘Grad Night Internship’ events, where you spend an evening working in a live bar or nightclub in order to gain valuable experience. The school also offers an extended version of their ‘Professional Bartending Course’ which includes the ‘Grad Night Internship’ along with flair training.
